Creations

I design and create works of art, especially illuminated sculptures, out of handmade, rare, exceptional papers that I have found during my travels, meeting the papermakers, visiting the retailers, trailing the paper trade and industry across the globe. Each paper used is special in that it is linked to an encounter, with another person, another artist, another place, or another culture.

These treasured papers and the stories they carry are the source of my inspiration. Each leaf has its own personality, sometimes soft and warm, other times crisp and cool. Each sheet speaks its own language, translucent or opaque, sturdy or delicate. Whether following a carefully planned design or creating spontaneously, I let the paper’s texture, weight and feel guide my hands, engaging in a subtle dialogue between concrete and abstract, between matter and thought.

Creating for me is responsive and intuitive. It is my way of relating to the world, of processing my life experiences, by finding connection through gesture and seeking meaning through making.

Over the years I have lived in countries as varied as the UK, South Korea, Croatia, Pakistan, or France. Each place has left its imprint – visually, emotionally, spiritually. My art reflects this layered journey. It grapples with themes of movement and stillness, estrangement and belonging, uprootedness and growth – darkness and light. It is a search for the universal threads that connect us, and beyond, for a permanent core, for a transcendence to hang on to.

Working and reworking both the surface and the substance of paper by combining manual force with other natural elements such as water, air, and especially the subtle power of light, I endlessly search that mysterious frontier where transformation occurs, where paper comes to life, leading to a new and unexpected beauty.
